Snowflake Mug Rugs Pattern

 This set of mug rugs featuring four different snowflake patterns is the perfect quick-to-make addition to your winter decor and makes a great gift. 

What is a mug rug? A mug rug is similar to a coaster, but sized slightly bigger in order to fit your mug of coffee, tea, or cocoa, as well as a treat such as a cookie or scone.

Each snowflake mug rug measures approximately 7x5.5" not including fringe. They are designed to be worked in overlay mosaic crochet using just one color per row. US crochet terminology is used throughout the pattern. 

For each mug rug you'll need worsted weight yarn* in two contrasting colors. The samples shown used Bernat Super Value in Royal and White, but other brands/colors will work as well. You'll need about 25 yards of color B (blue or other contrast) and about 18 yards color A (white) for each mug rug.

*Other yarns such as dk weight can be used with an appropriate hook for the yarn, but the finished size and amount of yarn will be different.

Also needed is a size H/5mm crochet hook or size needed to obtain gauge.

Gauge: 3.5 stitches per inch in overlay mosaic crochet (14 stitches = 4" in pattern)

Mosaic crochet basics:

• All rows are worked with right side facing.
• Fasten off yarn at the end of each row. 
• Don’t worry about all the yarn ends. The short yarn ends will be trimmed and create a nice fringe on each side. 
• Other than the foundation row and border stitches, all single crochet stitches are worked into the back loop only of the stitch in the previous row. 
• All double crochet stitches are worked into the front loop only of the stitch two rows below. 
• Border stitches are single crochets worked into both loops of the stitch in the previous row. Tip: Start each row with a standing single crochet stitch through both loops.

This pattern was designed as a mosaic version of my baby panda graphghan available in my Etsy shop. It is designed to be worked in overlay mosaic crochet and features an adorable baby panda holding a piece of bamboo with a striped background. It is worked in rows from the bottom up with only one color per row. A double border is worked at the end to encase all of the yarn ends, so the only yarn end you'll need to sew is the very last one.

The pattern is designed to be worked in worsted weight yarn, but it has also been tested with DK weight yarn. Finished size is approximately 38x38" with worsted weight yarn and a size H/5mm hook or 31x31" with dk weight yarn and a size G/4mm hook. It's a perfect baby, toddler, or lap size blanket.

Materials needed:

Worsted weight yarn in two contrasting colors. Sample shown was made with Bernat Super Value.

Border: Berry approximately 300 yds
