Knitting Graphghans: How to change color

I finally got a video to cooperate with my computer! Yay!!! Here's a quick tutorial on how to knit a graphghan. First, here's a practice graph. It's 15 stitches wide by 15 rows high. Right-click to save it.

Practice square graph 15x15
Next, you'll cast on the number of stitches in width. In this case 15 stitches. You'll start reading the graph in the bottom right corner. Following the color pattern on your graph, all of the odd-numbered rows are read right to left and you'll knit these. All of the even-numbered rows are read left to right and you'll purl these. Here's a quick video that shows you how to change colors. The most important thing to remember is you need to twist your yarn at color changes to lock the yarns together. This is to avoid making holes in your work.

  1. I am so thrilled to see someone talk about knitting graphgans, I have gone nuts buying patterns, and made 4 c2c blankets, but that did me in, my hands are in so much pain, crocheting just kills me. So now I am going to try knitting my next pattern, I dont like the really large blankets, but prefer the smaller 30-60 squares you sew together, much easier to handle. What size needles would you use with worsted weight yarn? Thanks fellow crafter.

  2. It's a matter of personal preference what size needles to use, but I usually use size 8 (5mm) needles with worsted weight yarn.

  3. If you have a crochet grapgaghan pattern can you use that and just knit pearl every other row?

    1. Yes, most crochet graphghan patterns that are created for single crochet would work for knitting. You would cast on the number of stitches in width. then knit each stitch on odd-numbered rows and purl each stitch on even-numbered rows. Since knit stitches are a little shorter than they are wide it will compress a little bit, but not enough to be a major issue.
